Summary

Extensive catch meadows of probable 19th to early 20th century date are visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s as narrow curvilinear earthwork ditches on the south-west and north-west facing slopes of a combe west and south-west of Lower Willings Farm. The earthworks have probably been levelled.

Numerous curvilinear and roughly parallel ditches are visible on aerial photographs of 1945 and 1946 as earthworks up to circa 2.5m wide and from circa 25m to 300m long, closely following the contours of a south-west and north-west facing combe slope to the west and south-west of Lower Willings Farm for over 1km.
The channels are probably former catch meadow gutters of 19th to early 20th century date.
Such systems irrigated combe slopes rather than valley floors using water abstracted from springs or streams.
Originating in the medieval period they were in widespread use in Devon in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The ditches are not identifiable on more recent images available to the survey and have probably been levelled.
