Curvilinear ditches are visible as earthworks up to circa 1.8m wide on aerial photographs of 1946 and digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2016, closely following the contours on the east-facing slopes of a combe south-east of Tuffland farm for circa 540m.
The channels are interpreted as the remains of gutters of a former catch meadow of 19th to early 20th century date.
Such systems irrigated combe slopes rather than valley floors using water abstracted from springs or streams. Originating in the medieval period they were in widespread use in Devon in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The ditches remain identifiable as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013.
