Three curvilinear and roughly parallel ditches are visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as earthworks circa 1m wide and up to circa 120m long, closely following the contours of the south-east facing combe slopes to the north-west of Higher Cumery House.
The channels are probably the remains of catch meadow gutters of 19th to early 20th century date. Catch meadows abstracted water from springs or streams to irrigated combe slopes rather than valley floors. Probably originating in the medieval period, ‘catch gutter’ water meadows were in widespread use in Devon in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The ditches are not identifiable as earthworks on more recent sources available to the survey and have probably been levelled.
