Vegetation mark of a sub-circular enclosure with a northern entrance (os).


NMR, CITING OS, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV232061.

The enclosure is oval with internal dims of 8.2m by 9.4m and is formed by a wall of small stones 1.2m wide. The wall is 0.2m high internally and 0.4m high externally on the w side, less on the e. There is no obvious break for an entrance. In the northern part there is a hut circle in very poor condition and of indeterminate type. Internal diam 4.3m. The n half utilises the enclosure wall and from this a turf covered branch wall forms the southern half of hut with a wide break in the sw quadrant. The site is within an extensive field system and 2 field walls adjoin the e and w sides (nmr, citing os).

Two hut circles visible, both within what could be subrectangular enclosures, but which are probably small fields of the parallel reave system (rchm app 1985: no reference given - fmg).

Vis=12/7/1991 (rchme) at sx52167810 set on a gentle sw slope beneath an outcrop is a roughly oval-shaped enclosure. It measures about 11.5m n-s by 10m within a turf-covered rubble wall 0.5m high, 1.2m- 2m wide. Set inside the curve of the n wall is a hut circle (5) with a possible entrance to its w side. The hut wall in the s is no longer evident. At the s end of the enclosure built up the slope to the e, is a similarly constructed rectangular rubble-walled feature about 9m e-w by 3m internally. At its w end there is a rubble scarp connecting it to the enclosure whilst its e end is formed by a field wall. Its purpose and relationship to the enclosure is not entirely clear but it appears to be contemporary (nmr, citing sainsbury).

Vis=14/10/1980 (os) at sx52157811 there is an enclosed hut circle situated on a slight w slope near the summit of smeardon down.
