Two hollows or pits are visible as earthworks flanking the road from Ennaton Cross to Ugborough village.
The pit abutting the north-west of the road is circa 23 by 10m in size and corresponds to a pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map.
The pit south-east of the road is not depicted on 19th century maps. It is larger in size, at circa 40 by 19m across.
The visible earthworks are interpreted as the remains of small quarries or extractive pits of post-medieval to 19th century date that possibly ceased to be used prior to circa 1880.
The pits remain identifiable on digital visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013.
