HER Number:MDV128087
Name:Catch meadow south of Toby Cross, Ugborough

Summary

A catch meadow of probable post-medieval to 19th century date is visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as narrow curvilinear earthwork ditches on the south-west facing slopes of a narrow combe to the south of Toby Cross. It might have operated as part of a larger system to the south. Very slight earthworks remain identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013.

Three curvilinear ditches are visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as very subtle, roughly parallel earthworks circa 2m to 3m wide up to circa 75m long, closely following the contours of the south-west facing combe.
The ditches are interpreted as the remains of a catch meadow of probable post-medieval to 19th century date.
Although separated by two field boundaries, due to a shared water source it is probable that the gutters recorded here operated in conjunction with a more extensive system to the south (MDV38165).
The ditches are not visible as earthworks digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2007 but are in part identifiable as very subtle earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013.
