A curvilinear ditch is are visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as an earthwork circa 2m to 3m wide and up to 135m long closely following the contours of the south-east facing combe slope between parsonage Lane and Donkey Lane, Ugborough.
The channel is interpreted as the remains of a simple catch meadow probably of 19th century date.
Catch meadows diverted from springs or streams and redistributed it along channels or gutters to irrigate combe slopes. Probably originating in the medieval period, they were in widespread use in Devon from the 19th to early 20th century.
The visible earthwork corresponds in part with a sluice-controlled water channel depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map, supporting the interpretation that the earthwork predates the late-19h century.
The western end of the ditch remains identifiable as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 but much of the feature has probably been levelled.
