HER Number:MDV128175
Name:Field system at Middle and East Soar, Malborough

Summary

The relict remains of a former field system are visible as numerous curvilinear earthwork banks on aerial photographs taken from 1946 onwards and on visualisations of lidar data captured in 2007. In common with the relict field systems of The Warren and Bolt Head, they could contain prehistoric elements.

Numerous broad curvilinear earthwork banks are visible.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

Numerous curvilinear earthwork banks, between circa 5 and 20 metres wide, are visible on digital visualisations of lidar data captured in 2007. Some indications of the banks are visible on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s, but they are not clear, and the width of the banks suggest they have been spread and somewhat levelled by agricultural activity. This area of land lies between the level area of the airfield and the rough ground of the coastal strip, and the extant field system here appears mostly medieval in character. The earthwork banks do not fit closely into the layout, and are likely to be earlier in origin. Some are on the same alignment as, and appear to be continuations of, the more clearly defined relict boundaries recorded in rough ground to the south at The Warren and Bolt Head (MDV36183 & MDV36184), and it is possible that they incorporate later prehistoric elements.
