A series of 'Ashland' field names is recorded on the Halberton Tithe Apportionment.

Field suggests that the name refers to 'land near or containing ash trees'.

Quanties of iron slag have been have been found in fields to the south, so in this case the term 'ash' could be similar in meaning to 'cinders' or 'blackland', referencing earlier settlement or industry.
