Summary
A possible simple catch meadow of probable post-medieval to 19th century date is visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as a narrow curvilinear earthwork ditch on the south-east facing slopes near the head of a combe south-west of Bastard’s Park Corner, Modbury. The ditch is identifiable as a very subtle earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.

A curvilinear ditch is visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as a subtle earthwork circa 2m wide and 175m long closely following the contours of the slope between the 65m and 60m contours on the south-east facing combe slopes south-west of Bastard’s Park Corner, Modbury.
The channel is interpreted as the remains of simple catch meadow, probably of post-medieval to 19th century date.
Catch meadows abstracted from springs or streams used channels, or gutters, to redistribute it to irrigate combe slopes. Originating probably in the medieval period they were in widespread use in Devon in the 19th century and continued in use into the mid-20th century.
The ditch is identifiable as a very subtle earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.
