The visible earthworks largely do not correspond with any boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Ermington.

Former field boundaries are identifiable on aerial photographs of the 1940s and visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019 as earthwork banks on the north-facing slopes south of Higher Ludbrook.
The visible banks fall within an area characterised by HLC as Barton Fields, enclosure likely to have been laid out between the 15th and 18th centuries, with some elements possibly following earlier divisions in the pre-existing medieval fields.
With one exception the banks do not correspond with any boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Ermington, and therefore were removed from use prior to the 1840s.
The curvilinear plan of many of the banks might support the interpretation that they are derived from strip of medieval date and were partly cleared for post-medieval reorganisation of the local field pattern, with some continuing to influence the later field pattern.
