Environment Agency, 2019, National Lidar Programme, LIDAR Environment Agency DTM 25-FEB-2019 (Cartographic). SDV363691.
A pit and mound are identifiable as earthworks.
Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.
A sub-rectangular pit circa 55 by 36m in size is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946 on the south-east facing slope north-east of Ludbrook.
Circa 10m south-east of the pit a copse is visible on the 1946s aerial photographs. The lidar derived images reveals the copse to be sited on the wider north-east of a roughly triangular mound circa 97m long and up to 35m wide.
The visible earthwork corresponds with a probable pit depicted on the Tithe Map for Ugborough but not the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map.
The pit and mound are interpreted as a former quarry or extractive pit and associated spoil heap of probable post-medieval to early 19th century date that had ceased to be used by the 1880s.
A slight hollow north-east of the possible spoil heap could be evidence of further extractive activity but could simply be part of the natural slope.
The pit and mound probably cut earlier field boundaries, recorded separately.
