The westernmost of the visible earthworks corresponds with an area, possibly a pit, depicted on the Tithe Map for Modbury. Plot 601 is listed as Old Kiln Field.

Two roughly oval pits approximately 20 and 40m in diameter are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards on the south-facing slopes west of Weeke Farm, Modbury.
The pits are interpreted as probably the remains of quarries or extractive pits. Slight banks or mounds visible on the northern, upslope edge of the pits might be evidence of spoil.
The westernmost pit earthwork corresponds with an area, possibly a pit, depicted with a dashed line on the Tithe Map for Modbury, and it therefore predates the 1840s.
The product of the pits is unclear. They are located within a plot (601) named as Old Kiln Field on the apportionments and could therefore be targeting local clay deposits, or potentially mark the location of the former kilns themselves.
The earthworks remain identifiable as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.
