HER Number:MDV128464
Name:Quarry or kiln site north-west of Weeke Farm, Modbury

Summary

An oval pit, probably a quarry of post-medieval to 19th century date, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards on the south-facing slopes to the north-west of Weeke Farm, Modbury. The earthworks might be associated with a former kiln in this field. The pit remains identifiable as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.

A roughly oval pit up to approximately 38 by 63m in size is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards on the south-facing slopes to the north-west of Weeke Farm, Modbury.
The pit is interpreted as probably the remains of a quarry or extractive pit. Slight banks or mounds visible on the southern, downslope edge of the pit might be evidence of spoil.
The visible earthwork corresponds with, but is larger than, a pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map. This area is also depicted with a dashed line on the Tithe Map for Modbury, and it therefore predates the 1840s.
The product of the pit is unclear. The plot in which it is located (601) is named as Old Kiln Field on the apportionments and the pit could therefore be targeting local clay deposits, or potentially mark the location of the former kilns themselves.
The earthworks remain identifiable as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.
