Monument Type(s) and Dates

  • QUARRY (Post Medieval to XIX - 1540 AD to 1880 AD (Between))

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The easternmost visible earthwork corresponds with a pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map.

Royal Air Force, 1946, RAF/CPE/UK/1890, Devon County Council RAF/CPE/UK/1890 RS 4098-4099 10-DEC-1946 (Aerial Photograph). SDV169268.

A pit is clearly visible as an earthwork, with a smaller hollow to the west.

Environment Agency, 2019, National Lidar Programme, LIDAR Environment Agency DTM 25-FEB-2019 (Cartographic). SDV363691.

Two pits are identifiable as subtle earthworks.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

Two irregularly shaped pits approximately 24 and 38m across are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards north of Ridge Road, Ermington, near the summit of the ridge along which Ridge Road runs, south of Higher Ludbrook Farm.
The pits are interpreted as probably the remains of quarries or extractive pits. The larger, easternmost pit corresponds closely with a pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map, and therefore predates circa 1880. It probably cuts a bank interpreted as a possible medieval field boundary (MDV128399) and is therefore post-medieval in origin.
This pit is bounded to the west by a low bank, probably spoil, which is possibly cut by the smaller pit, circa 6m to the west, therefore presumably post-dating it.
The earthworks remain identifiable as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.
