HER Number:MDV128469
Name:Extractive pit south of Ridge Road, Ermington

Summary

A pit, probably a quarry or extractive pit of post-medieval to 19th century date, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of the 1940s onwards just south of the summit of the ridge along which Ridge Road runs, south of Higher Ludbrook Farm. The pit is most clearly identifiable as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019.

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthworks do not correspond with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map.

Royal Air Force, 1946, RAF/CPE/UK/1890, Devon County Council RAF/CPE/UK/1890 RS 4098-4099 10-DEC-1946 (Aerial Photograph). SDV169268.

A pit is visible as an earthwork.

Environment Agency, 2019, National Lidar Programme, LIDAR Environment Agency DTM 25-FEB-2019 (Cartographic). SDV363691.

A pit is identifiable as an earthwork.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

An irregularly shaped pit approximately 27 by 34m across is visible as a subtle earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946 south of Ridge Road, Ermington, on the upper south-facing slopes of the ridge along which Ridge Road runs.
The pit remains clearly identifiable as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019, which also show evidence of a low bank surrounding the pit.
The pit is interpreted as the remains of a small quarry or extractive pit of post-medieval to 19th century date, and the bank probably evidence of upcast or spoil.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25inch First Edition map, and therefore possibly passed out of use some time prior to circa 1880. It does appear to cut a low, subtle bank interpreted as a possible medieval field boundary (MDV128385) and is therefore probably post-medieval in origin.
A similar pit is located immediately north of Ridge Road (MDV128467).
