Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

A curvilinear bank circa 3.5 to 4.5m wide and 167m long, flanked by narrow ditches up to 2.5m wide is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs of 1946 closely following the contours of the south-facing combe slopes between Best Park and Modbury.
The visible earthworks resemble a relict field boundary bank of medieval to post-medieval date, but do not correspond with any boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Modbury; They are also not in keeping with the surrounding field pattern, which has been characterised as medieval in character.
The south-west end of the curvilinear earthworks might be aligned on a drain depicted on the current Ordnance Survey MasterMap base map, and an alternative interpretation as a drainage feature of 19th to 20th century date might be more credible.
