Linear and curvilinear ditched banks are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946 onwards and identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019 on the south-west and north-east combe facing slopes east of Modbury.
Some of the banks on the north-west facing slopes correspond with field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Modbury. The banks fall within a field pattern characterised as probably first enclosed in the medieval period. None are depicted on the Ordnance Survey 1880s 25inch First Edition map.
This might support the interpretation that the banks are the remains of field boundaries of medieval origin that were partly cleared in the post-medieval period prior to 1840, and the remaining banks cleared by circa 1880.
