An oval pit circa 14m by 17m in size is visible on aerial photographs of the late 1980s as an earthwork on the west-facing slopes west of Whympston Farm.
The pit is interpreted as a small quarry or extractive pit. The visible earthwork does not correspond with any pit depicted on the Tithe Map for Modbury or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map but is co-located with a small copse on the latter. It is likely that the pit had ceased to be used by the early 19th century and the otherwise poor agricultural land was reused as woodland.
The pit remains identifiable as a subtle earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019
