Name:Trackway and enclosure south-west of Torrdown Plantation, Aveton Gifford

Summary

A linear bank and ditch are identifiable as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019 leading to an oval hollow on the west-facing hill slope to the south-west of Torrdown Plantation. The earthworks are possibly the remains of a trackway and pond, or pound, of medieval to post-medieval date.

A linear bank and ditch leading to an oval hollow are visible as earthworks.

A north-west to south-east aligned earthwork bank and hollow circa 3m to 5m wide are identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019 defining a possible trackway crossing the west-facing hill slope to the south-west of Torrdown Plantation for up to 250m.
The linear bank appears to abut an oval embanked enclosure circa 20m across. This is interpreted as a possible pond but could be evidence of a pound or stock enclosure.
The earthworks are situated on Plot 311, Lower Brake, on the Tithe Map for Aveton Gifford, but do not correspond with any features depicted on the Tithe Map. They may, however, be cut by evidence of quarrying or prospecting, recorded separately.
The ‘Brake place name might support an interpretation of a previously unenclosed or only recently cultivated character for this plot, and the interpretation of the earthworks as a trackway and pond or pound of pre-enclosure, medieval to post-medieval date origin.
