An irregularly shaped pit is identifiable as an earthwork measuring circa 26m by 65m on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, cut into the north-east facing slopes south of Bowringsleigh.
The visible earthwork is located within a plot (Plot 852) listed on the Tithe apportionment for West Alvington as a plantation. The plot remains depicted as a plantation on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map and is under dense tree cover on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2015.
The visible earthworks are probably the remains of an extractive pit or small quarry and associated spoil heap of post-medieval to early-19th century origin that had passed out of use by the 1840s, the otherwise poor agricultural land subsequently turned over to use as a plantation.
