A ditch circa 12m wide and 120m long is identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 as a subtle earthwork crossing the contours of the north-west facing combe slopes north of Sutton.
The visible earthwork does not correspond with any boundary depicted on the Tithe Map for South Milton but is in keeping with the character of the surrounding field pattern. This has been characterised by HLC as post medieval enclosure, sometimes called Barton Fields, probably laid out between the 15th-18th centuries, but with curving boundaries possibly following earlier divisions in the pre-existing medieval fields.
The ditch is interpreted as the remains of a former field boundary of probable medieval origin that had been removed by the early 19th century.
