Banks up to circa 5m wide are identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 as subtle earthwork banks defining a rectilinear pattern of enclosure crossing the contours of the east-facing slopes south of Alston Farm. The subtle banks enclose and cross a rectilinear area approximately 0.5ha in area terraced into the east-facing slope.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map for Malborough but are in keeping with the character of the enclosure pattern immediately to the north. This has been characterised by HLC as a type of post-medieval enclosure sometimes called Barton Fields, that were probably laid out between the 15th-18th centuries. Some curving boundaries possibly follow earlier divisions in the pre-existing medieval fields.
The visible earthworks are interpreted as evidence of enclosure dating probably from the post-medieval period that had been removed by the early-19th century.
