Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

The visible earthwork corresponds with a plot listed as ‘The Quarry’’ in the Tithe Apportionments (Plot 1151).

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The visible earthwork does not correspond with any pit depicted on the Ordnance Survey 25inch First Edition map. An area of rough ground partly matches the location of the pit.

Royal Air Force, 1945, RAF/106G/UK/967, RAF/106G/UK/967 RP 3138 01-NOV-1945 (Aerial Photograph). SDV351060.

A pit is visible as an earthwork.

Environment Agency, 1998-2017, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: South Devon Coast to Dartmoor, LIDAR SX7242 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 31-MAY-2017 (Cartographic). SDV361470.

A pit is identifiable as an earthwork.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2019-2020, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 2, Avon Valley to Plymouth (AI&M, formerly NMP) (Interpretation). SDV362982.

A pit is visible on aerial photographs of 1945 onwards as an oval earthwork measuring up to circa 32m across.
The visible earthwork corresponds with a plot depicted on the Tithe Map for West Alvington listed as ‘The Quarry’ in the Tithe Apportionments (Plot 1151) but is depicted only as a patch of rough ground on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25inch map.
The pit is probably the remains of an extractive pit of post-medieval to early-19th century date that had ceased to be used by the 1880s.
The pit remains identifiable as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
