Full description

Robinson, R., 1977-1979, South Brent Parish Checklist, 487-8 of 821, sketch (Worksheet). SDV151046.

(SX65NE/240, May 1977) China clay settling pits in field north-east of ruined building with brick kiln. In field 798 (Long Close on the tithe map but Claypits to the present tenant) are six circular depressions that may represent recently filled in china clay settling tanks. According to local information, the causeway along the side of the field by the settling tanks (which measure about 15m diameter) carried the china clay liquid in a launder from which sluices controlled its passage to the settling tanks.

Ferry, T., 2020, Pennaton China Clay drying kiln building, South Brent (Report - Survey). SDV363876.

(Visited September 2020) All six former circular settling tanks are clearly visible on the ground, evenly-spaced in a straight line. The centre of the south-eastern tank is at SX6889459468 and the north-western tank at SX6881359571.
In addition to the level area by the building referred to in the HER description, there appears to have been a track running southwards away from it.
Speculation about a connection to the railway needs to be questioned closely, as the Knatta Barrow china clay operation may have predated the arrival of the Great Western Railway south of Newton Abbot by several years. A connection to the road past the Glazebrook House Hotel may be more likely. Photographed.
