Summary

Trackway leadng from Walkhampton to the church to the north-east may have been in use as early as the Medieval period. The church predates Walkhampton village (earliest mention is 1259); the path, known as Elbow Lane probably dates to the later 17th century, accordinng to Hamilton-Leggett.

Dog-leg trackway leading to the church is depicted on the Walkhampton Tithe Map.

Elbow Lane: Probably constructed in 1683 by the parson, Thomas Bowen, whose initials can be seen carved on a stone now set into the wall but once part of the stile by Church steps. Even in 1840 this "dog leg" path was still known as "the New Church Road".
