Full description

Field name noted. Small structure shown; possible kiln?

Rainbird, P. + Passmore, A., 2016, Prehistoric and Romano-British Remains and a Post-Medieval Brickworks at Knowle Lane, Cullompton, Devon, 181-203, fig 9, (Article in Serial). SDV363912.

Three large features were identified in Area B; two brick-making kilns and a backfilled quarry pit. Kiln 1 to the east had been largely demolished; location established by small patches of brick structure, a flue and strips of burnt ground. Measured approximately 8m by 5m. Within the kiln, six strips of burning oriented north-north-west by south-south-east represent the bases of the firing chambers.
Kiln 2 was located 55m to the south-west of the first and was constructed of mortar-bonded brick and had been deliberately demolished with walls pushed over and voids filled with soil and waste from brick manufacture. Semi-subterranean, due to its poor survival the full plan could not be established, but it was rectangular and measured approximately 14m by 8m.
The brick-making production could not be securely dated, but is post-Medieval in date (most likely dates 1750/1770-1840), and expected to have gone out of use by 1841, when the current land use was described as arable. The former land use was reflected in the field name; 'Brick Yard Field'.
Kiln 1 was a small updraft intermittent Scotch kiln; Kiln 2 was more complex and technologically developed structure. See article for full details.
