A possible rectilinear earthwork platform, immediately west of the settlement of Portingtown, is visible on images derived from lidar captured in 2005 and 2013. The area was depicted as orchard on the Tithe map. It is tentatively interpreted as a medieval building platform, perhaps indicating that the settlement in this hamlet was once more extensive. Two curvilinear earthwork banks and ditch, each approximately 1.5 metres wide and 8 metres apart, are oriented south-west from the platform then turn to the south, apparently aligning with property boundaries depicted on the Tithe map. These may have been a routeway or perhaps defined building plots or infields.
Understanding Landscapes Project, 2020-2021, University of Exeter Understanding Landscapes Project - Volunteer data, 382.12 (Interpretation). SDV363949.
Significant ground disturbance which may be building evidence showing past habitation. Possibly building bases. Indicated as wood or orchard on tithe map.
