At least five irregularly shaped pits approximately 15 to 50m across are identifiable as earthworks under the tree cover of Buttspill Wood on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019. The visible earthworks are cut into the north-east facing valley slopes close to the banks of the River Tamar.
Only the northernmost is partly depicted on the Ordnance Survey First and Second Edition 25 inch maps.
The pits are interpreted as extractive pits or quarries of medieval to post-medieval date.
