Numerous pits on average 5m across are identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2019 as earthworks cut into the north-east facing valley slopes under the tree cover of Buttspill Wood.
The pits are roughly arrange in lines aligned approximately north to south, and most are associated with a small mound on their downslope side
The pits are interpreted as prospecting pits or, possibly more likely, lode-back pits of medieval to post-medieval date exploiting the tin or lead deposits extending north from the Tamar Valley Mine to the south.
