Summary

Linear and curvilinear earthwork banks, interpreted as relict field boundaries of a medieval field system and possible tree planting banks of post-medieval or 19th century orchards, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2007 and 2013. The field system and possible orchards had passed out of use by the late 19th century.

Earthworks of linear and curvilinear banks, circa 7m wide and northwest to southeast and northeast to southwest aligned, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2007 and 2013. The earthworks do not correspond with any features shown on the late 19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map but are in keeping with the surrounding historic field pattern, which is characterised as Barton fields. They are interpreted as relict field boundaries of a medieval field system that had fallen out of use by the late 19th century.
A series of narrow linear earthworks banks, circa 4m wide, occupying three adjacent land parcels at SX45637355 are also visible and are interpreted as possible tree planting banks of post-medieval or 19th century orchards. No orchards are shown in this exact location on the available historic maps, although are depicted within the surrounding area.
The earthworks identified here during the Understanding Landscapes Project were recorded as three separate features, including 361.8, 361.9 and 338.7. They are probably associated features and so have been incorporated into a single monument record.

Understanding Landscapes Project, 2020-2021, University of Exeter Understanding Landscapes Project - Volunteer data, 361.8; 361.9 & 338.7 (Interpretation). SDV363949.
