Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2020-2021, Tamar/Lidar; A Single Source Approach to Landscape Survey and Socially Distanced Community Archaeology (AI&M project) (Interpretation). SDV363945.

Closely spaced parallel banks circa 5m wide are identifiable on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013 and 2019 as very subtle earthworks on the west-facing slopes overlooking the River Tamar, to the west of Little Gawton.
The visible earthworks are possibly the remains of ridges characteristic of those frequently seen in orchards of probable 19th century origin, made to enhance drainage and improve soil depth.
The plots in which the banks are located are not identified as orchards on the Tithe Map for Bere Ferrers or the Ordnance Survey 25inch First Edition map, although Plot 483 includes cherries in cultivation type.
As such, the subtle earthworks are interpreted as the remains of orchard of possible post-medieval to 19th century date that had been at least partly cleared prior to the mid-19th century.
The earthworks include those interpreted by the Understanding Landscapes project as possible ridge and furrow, under ID 292.2.

Understanding Landscapes Project, 2020-2021, University of Exeter Understanding Landscapes Project - Volunteer data, 292.2 (Interpretation). SDV363949.
