A pit is identifiable as an irregularly shaped earthwork up to circa 60 across on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2005 and 2013 on the on the higher south-facing slopes of Affaland Moor.
The visible earthworks do not correspond with any feature depicted on the 19th or 20th century maps available to the survey. A pit annotated as ‘Old Quarry’ is depicted approximately 150m to the west.
The earthworks are interpreted as the remains of an extractive pit or small quarry of probable post-medieval to early 19th century origin, that had ceased to be worked by the later-19th century, perhaps on the enclosure of the southern part of Affaland Moor.
