Parallel earthwork banks, circa 4m wide, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013 and on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken in 2019. The banks are closely spaced and situated on level ground, occupying an area of approximately 0.67 hectares.
The visible earthworks correspond with adjacent land parcels 446 and 447 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, which are both recorded as ‘Orchard’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. An orchard is also shown here on the early 20th century Second Edition Ordnance Survey map, although the eastern orchard which corresponds with land parcel 447 on the Tithe Map had evidently been cleared by this time. Digital images derived from aerial photographs show that the western orchard had been cleared of trees by 2004.
Orchards in this location support the interpretation that the earthworks are the remains of post-medieval or 19th century tree planting banks, the fruit trees having been established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage.
