Name:Rapier found near Broadsands, Paignton

Summary

An incomplete bronze rapier discovered in 2013 near the Broadsands chambered tomb. Rapier has a damaged trapezoidal hilt, with a notched butt and slightly flattened midrib. Blade is biconvex in section and quite narrow. Covered in mottled green/brown corrosion pitting. Broken and bent in antiquity across the upper mid-blade. Surviving length is 139.5mm, blade width and thickness are 21.9mm and 3.1mm. Likely dates to the Middle Bronze Age (c. 1400-1150 BC) Taunton-Penard period.

An incomplete bronze rapier was discovered through metal detecting in 2013 near the Broadsands chambered tomb. The find site is fairly close to the tomb (SX 89295732) and was originally considered to be modern metal scrap but took the find into Torquay Museum where it was identified.
Rapier has a damaged trapezoidal hilt, with a notched butt and slightly flattened midrib. Blade is biconvex in section and quite narrow. Covered in mottled green/brown corrosion pitting. Broken and bent in antiquity across the upper mid-blade. Surviving length is 139.5mm, blade width and thickness are 21.9mm and 3.1mm. Likely dates to the Middle Bronze Age (c. 1400-1150 BC) Taunton-Penard period.
