Summary
A section of curvilinear bank east of Biteford Farm is visible as a subtle earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013. An east-west orientated curvilinear bank circa 4 metres in width is visible as a subtle earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data. The bank is situated in a field on west sloping ground above the River Torridge to the immediate east of Biteford Farm.
The bank does not correspond with any features depicted on the available 19th century historic maps, however it is in parallel with former field boundaries to the north and south. The historic landscape is characterised as medieval enclosures based on strip fields. Evidence of medieval enclosures are depicted on historic maps and aerial imagery surrounding Biteford Farm up until the mid-20th century, after which the land was incorporated into large fields.
The earthwork bank is interpreted as a section of field boundary of probable medieval origin that may have formed part of a strip field system and was removed prior to circa 1840.
