A series of parallel linear banks and ditches each circa 6 metres in width and orientated approximately north-south are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data. The earthworks are situated within a small field to the immediate west of Deptford Farm and are the only evidence of such earthworks in this area.
The earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on available historic maps dating from the mid-19th century. Their close position to the farmstead is typical of orchards, however there is no indication of an orchard in this location on historic maps. The plot is recorded as ‘Barn Park’ and under arable cultivation in the Tithe Map. The north-south orientation of the earthworks is roughly aligned with the topographical contours, on the broadly east facing slope. The size and shape of the plot has remained static since the mid-19th century.
A shrunken settlement of medieval to post-medieval origin is recorded in the south-east part of the farm and the landscape is characterised as medieval enclosures based on strip fields.
The earthwork banks and ditches are interpreted as either post-medieval to 19th century planting ridges for orchard trees, or an area of medieval to post-medieval ridge and furrow.
