Parallel earthwork banks, circa 4m wide, are visible on aerial imagery taken from the 1940’s onwards and on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013. The banks are closely spaced and occupy an area of circa 0.5 hectares of level ground. The visible earthworks correspond with land parcel 203 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map with a cultivation type of ‘Orchard’ recorded on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. An orchard is also shown here on the late 19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map, although by the 1940s it has been largely cleared of trees. Scattered trees remain visible in this location in 2019.
An orchard in this location supports the interpretation that the earthworks are the remains of post-medieval or 19th century tree planting banks, the fruit trees having been established on the earthworks for increased soil depth and improved drainage.
