An irregularly shaped pit, circa 45m long by 15m wide, is visible as an earthwork on RAF 1940’s aerial photographs and on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013. The southern extent of the pit corresponds with a small earthwork on the early 20th century Ordnance Survey Second Edition map. A feature which is labelled as ‘Pit (disused)’ is also depicted in this location on the 2021 Ordnance Survey MasterMap.
The earthwork is therefore interpreted as a post-medieval or 19th century extractive pit which had probably passed out of use by the early 20th century. The earthwork is not visible on other available aerial imagery owing to thick tree cover.
This feature has been previously transcribed by the Tamar Valley NMP survey.
Ordnance Survey, 2021, MasterMap 2021 (Cartographic). SDV364015.
The earthwork corresponds with a feature labelled as ‘Pit (disused)’.
