Irregularly shaped earthworks of a pit and bank are visible on RAF 1940’s aerial photographs and on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013. Earthworks of an irregularly shaped pit and bank are visible.

Cornwall Archaeological Unit, 2001-2002, Tamar Valley National Mapping Programme Transcriptions and Database Records (Interpretation). SDV346287.

This feature has been previously transcribed by the Tamar Valley NMP survey. Further details from the survey database, including aerial photograph references and interpretive text, are awaiting accessioning.

Earthworks of an irregularly shaped pit and bank are visible.

Hegarty, C., Houghton, E., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2020-2021, Tamar/Lidar; A Single Source Approach to Landscape Survey and Socially Distanced Community Archaeology Area 2 (Culture Recovery Fund project) (Interpretation). SDV364011.

Irregularly shaped earthworks of a pit, circa 35m long by 21m wide, which is defined by a bank along its northern edge, circa 25m long by 4m wide, are visible on RAF 1940’s aerial photographs and on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013.
No features are shown in this location on the late 19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey map. By the time of the early 20th century Second Edition Ordnance Survey map, a small earthwork which corresponds with the eastern extent of the pit is shown in this location. Structures which are labelled as ‘Water Works (Stratton & Bude)’ are also depicted in proximity to the east. Digital images derived from 1940’s RAF aerial photographs show a trackway that extends from the water works up and terminating at the location of the earthwork pit and bank, suggesting that the two are possibly associated.
The earthworks are therefore interpreted as evidenec of a late 19th or early 20th century extractive pit, with corresponding spoil heap, that was possibly associated with the construction or use of Stratton and Bude Water Works.
This feature has been previously transcribed by the Tamar Valley NMP survey.
