Name: | Possible building platforms at Glebe Cottage, Pancrasweek |
---|
Summary
Two rectilinear and flat-topped banks, interpreted as possible medieval or post-medieval building platforms, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013. Any structures associated with these possible platforms had evidently been demolished by the mid-19th century.

Two rectilinear and flat-topped banks, both circa 40 metres long by 25 metres wide, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013. The adjacent earthworks are located to the east of Glebe Cottage which is depicted on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map. The earthworks do not correspond with any rectilinear features shown in this location on this map, or on later available historic maps.
The origin of these earthworks is largely uncertain, but their form and proximity to Glebe Cottage supports the interpretation that they are possible building platforms of medieval or post-medieval date. Any structures associated with these possible platforms had evidently been demolished by the mid-19th century. Some degree of caution should, however, be exercised since it is also possible that the earthworks are of natural origin.
