Summary

An irregularly shaped pit, interpreted as a 19th century quarry, is visible as an earthwork on aerial imagery taken from the 1940’s onwards and on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2005 and 2013. The quarry had probably passed out of use by the early to mid-20th century.

The earthwork is situated within land parcel 361 which is recorded as ‘Great Crimp Hill and Quarry’.

An irregularly shaped pit, circa 67 metres long by 30 metres wide, is visible as an earthwork on aerial imagery taken from the 1940’s onwards and on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2005 and 2013.
The pit is situated within land parcel 361 on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map which is recorded as ‘Great Crimp Hill and Quarry’ on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment. It also corresponds with an earthwork and a trackway labelled as ‘Quarry’ on both the late 19th century First Edition and early 20th century Ordnance Survey maps.
This supports the interpretation that the earthwork is a quarry of 19th century date. Aerial photographs of the 1940s show that the pit is largely covered in trees, suggesting that it passed out of use by this time.
This feature has been previously transcribed by the Tamar Valley NMP survey. These transcriptions have been superseded by those resulting from this survey.
