Name: | Strip field system north of Longlands Cross, Clawton |
---|
Summary
Earthworks of curvilinear and linear banks and ditches, interpreted as possible relict field boundaries of a medieval strip field system, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013. The field boundaries had largely been removed by the mid-19th century.

Earthworks of curvilinear and linear banks and ditches, between 5-15 metres wide and orientated north-west to south-east, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013.
The parallel and closely spaced earthworks were recorded in two concentrations, with those to the south visible as ditches and those to the north mostly visible as banks. Those to the north correspond with three field boundaries which are depicted on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map. The remaining earthworks do not correspond with any such features on this map, or on later available historic maps, but are closely in keeping with the surrounding historic field pattern, which is characterised as medieval enclosures based on strip fields.
The form of the earthworks supports the interpretation that they are possible relict field boundaries of a medieval strip field system which had largely been removed by the mid-19th century.
