An oval depression approximately 15 metres by 11 metres situated on a north-west facing slope to the south-east of the village of Welcombe is visible as a subtle earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013. The depression does not correspond with any features depicted on the available historic 19th century maps. A watercourse is depicted flowing south-east to north-west to the immediate west of the earthwork on the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map.
The earthwork depression is interpreted as a possible post-medieval to 19th century extractive pit, however it may alternatively have a geological origin.
