Curvilinear and linear banks, between 6-13m wide and orientated north-east to south-west and north-west to south-east, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2013. The earthworks occupy an area of circa 9 hectares of gentle to moderate north-west and west facing slope. At their western extent, the earthworks define numerous rectilinear land parcels that measure between 40-90 metres in length by 23-38 metres in width.
They do not correspond with any features shown in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, or on later available historic maps, but are in keeping with the surrounding historic field pattern, which is characterised variously as medieval enclosures based on strip fields, post-medieval enclosures and as park and garden.
The banks are interpreted as the remains of relict boundaries of a medieval field system, that had been removed by the mid-19th century. Some elements of this field system may, however, be later adaptations of the post-medieval period.
The earthworks in this location were recorded as five separate features and by two separate volunteers during the Understanding Landscapes Project, including 427.11, 427.24, 450.1, 450.2 and 450.3. They are probably part of the same field system and so have been incorporated into this single monument record.
