Hegarty, C., Houghton, E., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2020-2021, Tamar/Lidar; A Single Source Approach to Landscape Survey and Socially Distanced Community Archaeology Area 2 (Culture Recovery Fund project) (Interpretation). SDV364011.
A curvilinear bank approximately 6 metres in width and flanked by ditches between 5 and 8 metres orientated approximately north-east to south-west, and adjoining a ditch 6 metres in width and orientated approximately north-west to south-east, are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013.
The earthworks are situated in a field immediately west of Hele and adjoin extant field boundaries at either end. They do not correspond with any features depicted on the available 19th century historic maps, however they are parallel with an adjacent field boundary. The historic landscape is characterised as medieval enclosures based on strip fields. The medieval settlement of Hele is recorded adjacent (MDV113674).
The earthworks were partially transcribed as part of the Tamar Valley NMP survey.
The bank and ditches are interpreted as a medieval field boundary, that may have formed part of a strip field system, and that passed out of use by circa 1880.
Understanding Landscapes Project, 2020-2021, University of Exeter Understanding Landscapes Project - Volunteer data, 562.8 (Interpretation). SDV363949.
