HER Number:MDV129949
Name:Earthworks at Hele, St Giles on the Heath

Summary

Curvilinear banks and ditches situated in a field within the village of Hele are visible as earthworks on visualisations derived from lidar captured in 2004 and 2013 and are interpreted as field boundaries of medieval to post-medieval origin that passed out of use by the late-19th century, with possible ground surface disturbance which may relate to post-medieval to modern extraction, or may be of geological origin.

Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

The earthworks do not correspond with any depicted features. The north-west to south-east orientated bank and ditch align with a field boundary to the north-west. The plot is shown under orchard cultivation.

Royal Air Force, 1946 - 1949, Royal Air Force Aerial Photographs (Aerial Photograph). SDV342938.

The plot is shown as being under partial orchard cultivation. The north-west to south-east orientated ditch is faintly visible as a cropmark.

Environment Agency, 2000-2019, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: Tamar Aerial Survey project area, LIDAR Environment Agency LAST RETURN 19-DEC-2004 (Cartographic). SDV363954.

Curvilinear earthwork banks and ditches are visible, with some possible depressions.

NERC, 2013, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) Tellus: Tamar Aerial Survey project area, LIDAR Tellus LAST RETURN 01-JUL-2013 to 31-AUG-2013 (Cartographic). SDV363955.

Curvilinear earthwork banks and ditches are visible, with some possible depressions.

Hegarty, C., Houghton, E., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2020-2021, Tamar/Lidar; A Single Source Approach to Landscape Survey and Socially Distanced Community Archaeology Area 2 (Culture Recovery Fund project) (Interpretation). SDV364011.

A north-west to south-east orientated ditch and bank both between 5 and 8 metres in width and 95 metres in length spanning the length of a field, is visible as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar captured in 2004 and 2013. The bank extends to the north-east in several places across the field, appearing to partially enclose it. A possible depression or depressions are visible in the south-east part of the field, however these are not clearly discernible.
The earthworks do not correspond with any features depicted on the available 19th century maps. They are situated in a small field within the village of Hele depicted as a recently planted orchard on the Ordnance Survey 25 inch First Edition map. The north-west to south-east bank and ditch aligns with a field boundary to the north-west and a kink in a field boundary to the south-east.
Aerial photographs from the 1940s show the field as under partial orchard cultivation, and a faint cropmark of the north-west to south-east bank and ditch is visible. Mid to late-20th century mapping shows several paths crossing the field, including one aligning approximately with a section of bank extending to the north-east. Some remnant orchard trees are shown. The medieval settlement of ‘Heele’ is recorded immediately to the north-west.
The earthworks are interpreted as field boundaries of medieval to post-medieval origin that passed out of use by the late-19th century. Some ground disturbance in the south-east part of the field may relate to post-medieval extraction works or may be modern in origin. Alternatively, they may be geological.
