HER Number:MDV129960
Name:Curvilinear enclosures at Gatherley, Lifton

Summary

Earthwork banks that define two contiguous curvilinear enclosures are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013. They are interpreted as evidence of a possible post-medieval or early 19th century mine or a former settlement. Any mine workings or settlement in this location had been abandoned by the mid-19th century.

Curvilinear earthwork banks, circa 4 metres wide and north-east to south-west and north-west to south-east aligned, are visible on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013. The earthworks occupy an area of 0.6 hectares of gentle south-west facing slope and define two contiguous curvilinear enclosures, both circa 23 metres long by 14 metres wide. Additional banks possibly associated with these enclosures are visible to the north.
The banks do not correspond with any features shown in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, or on later available historic maps. Earthworks labelled as ‘Old Shafts’ and ‘Old Shaft’ are, however, shown in proximity to the north-west and north-east, respectively, on the late 19th century First Edition Ordnance Survey Map. A mine (MDV2728) is also recorded in this location.
The enclosures are therefore interpreted as evidence of a post-medieval or early 19th century mine or alternatively may define an area of former settlement associated with Gatherley. Any mine workings or settlement in this location had been abandoned by the mid-19th century.
