Name:Ditch near Northcott Wood Camp, Northcott

Summary

A curvilinear ditch is visible as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013. The ditch appears to join Northcott Wood Camp hillfort with the Iron Age settlement recorded to its north-east and is interpreted as a possible field boundary of medieval to post-medieval origin, or as a trackway or boundary feature contemporary to and associated with the prehistoric monuments.

A curvilinear ditch up to possibly circa 415 metres in length, between 4 and 13 metres in width, and orientated largely north-east to south-west before curving to the west at its north extent, is visible as an earthwork on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013.
The ditch joins the central enclosure of Northcott Wood Camp hillfort (MDV2760) at its south-west end. It also curves through an Iron Age settlement to the north-east of the camp (MDV2763) where it is partially flanked by banks. Sections of the ditch align with field boundaries depicted on the Tithe Map.
The ditch is interpreted either as a field boundary of medieval to post-medieval origin, or as a trackway or boundary ditch feature associated with the Prehistoric monuments it connects to, that was later partially utilised as field boundaries. Alternatively, it could have a more recent origin, for example created by visitors to the hillfort or as secondary access to the woodland.
