Name: | Possible strip field system south-west of Gatherley, Lifton |
---|
Summary
Curvilinear banks, interpreted as possible relict field boundaries of a medieval strip field system, are visible as earthworks on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken in 2001 and on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013. The possible field boundaries had been removed by the mid-19th century.

Curvilinear banks, circa 5 metres wide and north-east to south-west aligned, are visible as earthworks on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken in 2001 and on visualisations derived from lidar data captured in 2004 and 2013.
The earthworks do not correspond with any curvilinear features shown in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, or on later available historic maps, but are in keeping with the surrounding historic field pattern, which is characterised as medieval enclosures based on strip fields.
The form of the earthworks supports the interpretation that they are possible relict field boundaries of a medieval strip field system, the boundaries having been removed by the mid-19th century. A series of parallel, but less distinct, earthwork banks are also visible within this land parcel. They are interpreted as evidence of probable post-medieval or 19th century narrow ridge and furrow for agricultural improvement and have not been recorded.
